Course Selections - Health

  • The course is intended to educate and empower students to make responsible choices regarding their health. Units include: wellness, mental/emotional health, nutrition, alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug prevention and reproductive health. All units focus on decision-making and self-evaluation.

  • This course continues the promotion of good health and wellness throughout the lifespan. Students will analyze health information, develop skills in decision-making, and develop positive (self-esteem) attitudes about themselves that will enhance their own level of health and wellness. Students will explore health issues in mental/emotional health, safety and injury prevention (CPR & First Aid), chronic diseases and disorders, prescription and illicit drug use and abuse, healthy family and interpersonal relationships, and human sexuality.

Course Selections - Health Occupations

  • Public health is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. In this course, students will be introduced to key public health concepts, theories, and case studies. We will examine a variety of examples of health inequities and health promotion around the world and learn how biological, social, and ecological factors influence them.

  • This course introduces the vocabulary used in the language of medicine. Emphasis is placed on building medical terms using prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. This course also includes students learning to perform history-taking, clinical investigations, select medical skills, diagnostic reasoning, effective communication, teamwork, and developing professional skills. Topics covered in this course are: Introduction into Medical Terminology; Human Body in Health and Disease; Skeletal System; Muscular System; Cardiovascular System; Lymphatic and Immune System; Respiratory System; Digestive System; Urinary System; Nervous System and Mental Health; Special Senses: Eyes and Ears; Integumentary System; Endocrine System; Reproductive System; and Pharmacology.

  • This course provides knowledge and skills students need for careers in health care. Students focus on day-to-day skills and expectations for health professionals, which include promoting wellness, maintaining a safe environment, creating medical records, and practicing good communication, collaboration, and leadership. Using real-life scenarios and application-driven activities, students learn the responsibilities and challenges of being health care professionals and deepen their knowledge of various career options. In addition to building their understanding of technical concepts and skills, students evaluate the qualifications required for specific careers and develop personal career plans to pursue work in the healthcare industry and extend their knowledge of oral and written communication in health science.
