JROTC Cadets Take on Leadership Challenge at Camp Rilea
From May 7–11, 2025, 11 Cadets from our high school’s JROTC program participated in the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC), joining over 110 cadets from seven other high schools across Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington. The event took place at National Guard Camp Rilea, located near Seaside on the scenic Oregon coast.
Over four action-packed days, cadets engaged in a variety of physically and mentally demanding activities aimed at developing leadership, teamwork, and confidence. Training included the Army Fitness Test, land navigation using maps and compasses, military radio procedures, medical first aid, rappelling, and tackling a challenging obstacle course. Cadets also attended leadership classes and constructed a one-rope bridge using their knot-tying skills.
Excursions to historical and operational sites—including Fort Stevens, Fort Clatsop, and Coast Guard ships—added educational depth to the experience. The final event, the Leader Reaction Course, required cadet teams to solve complex problems using all the skills they had developed throughout the camp.
“These cadets were all challenged both physically and mentally,” said Major Doug Thomas. “They will all be better leaders for our program next year because of this experience.”
We are proud of our cadets for representing our school with determination, teamwork, and leadership throughout the JCLC!
