Fifth graders are learning about insects in a life science class. Mrs. Fernaeus explained, "We have studied metamorphosis stages, what makes an animal an insect, and today we learned about the different mouth parts they have. We simulated using mandibles and a proboscis as we tried to eat like flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, and butterflies. It was a buggy lunch!" 🐜🐞

Did you know? Every OCSD student a library that goes wherever they go?

Oregon City School District provides every student free access to Sora, a digital library app designed specifically for K–12 learners. Whether your student is a confident reader, still building their skills, or somewhere in between, Sora has something for them — and the tools to help them grow.

Here's what's waiting for your family
📚 A library built for them: Ebooks, audiobooks, picture books, read-alongs, and graphic novels — all hand-selected and age-appropriate for all our readers.
🏠 Access anywhere, anytime: Sora works on phones, tablets, and computers. Books are available 24/7 — no library hours, no late fees, no lost books.
🌎 Books in their language: The app is available in 13 languages and includes bilingual titles and world language books, so every family can engage with reading in the language that works best for them.
👁️ Built for every kind of reader: Adjustable text size, dyslexic-friendly fonts, high contrast display, and a read-aloud feature that highlights words as they're spoken — Sora meets your student where they are.
🏅 Motivation built in: Daily reading goals, progress tracking, and achievement badges make reading fun and engaging!
🏙️ Two libraries in one: Through our partnership with Oregon City Public Library, your student's student library card also unlocks OCPL's digital collection inside Sora — even more books, same app, no extra steps.

Select the Oregon City School District, log in with your student's Classlink, and start exploring today.

📚 Download Sora for free wherever you get your apps.

Advanced woodworking students from CAIS visited Gaffney Lane to help our fifth graders build their very own tool boxes! From hammering pre-drilled wood to adding their custom decorations, our students loved getting hands-on. The best part? Everyone headed home with a finished masterpiece. A huge thanks to the CAIS crew for mentoring our future builders! Check out our young carpenters in action!

Let's talk about what "being here" does for our students. 📈

Students who attend school each day:
Earn higher grades and test scores - these look great on job applications, apprenticeship applications, college applications, etc.
Build stronger friendships and social connections - a strong support system helps students thrive
Feel more confident and engaged in learning - making learning connections stronger
Have better career and college opportunities - see the first three points!

We're here to support students. If you or your student needs support in attendance (or otherwise), OCSD offers counseling services for students, family resource supports, and staff who care. Please reach out to your school for more information on accessing these supports.

Show up. Level up. We're cheering for you every single day.

Competitive yo-yoer, Gaffney Lane alumnus, and OCHS grad, Alec Hankins delivered an exciting Perseverance Presentation to 4th graders today! Alec highlighted the vital importance of staying committed to our goals even when faced with the urge to give up. Students were excited to request their favorite tricks like the "DNA!" In June, Alec will finish his Engineering degree at OSU and compete again at the National Yo-yo Contest in Las Vegas. Good luck! https://youtu.be/jf49_Ag074k?si=gzOssmmqmM_Vx5uG

Fifth graders in Mrs. Fernaeus room worked in small groups to solve a math task: How many 2 digit numbers are there without 4’s or 5’s? Mrs. Fernaeus explained that some students noticed the patterns, but everyone did the heavy lifting required to be mathematicians today.

Students are teaming up with Mr. Hardy, our school counselor to dive into Kelso‘s Choice Wheel. They’ve been busy collaborating in teams to write original scripts and scenarios where Kelso’s Wheel strategies help save the day! Ms. McQueen said, "The creativity is flowing and we can’t wait for the next visit when they’ll perform their plays for the class." I look forward to posting photos of that day, too!

Thank you PTO for bringing OMSI's “Electrifying Activities” to 5th graders today! Ms. McQueen told me, "Students explored circuits, batteries, bulbs, and motors to learn about the generation and transmission of electricity. We even investigated Van de Graaff generators which literally made our hair stand on end!" The kids explained to me that these machines generate static electricity from belts and rollers that create massive amounts of friction. We all learned some cool things today.💡
