The request for the excuse should be done prior to (if possible), or a max of two days of the student’s absence otherwise it remains unexcused.

Required information includes:

  1. Name of student

  2. Parent/Guardian Name

  3. Date of absence

  4. Reason for absence

  5. Phone number where Parent/Guardian can be reached.

Arriving to School Late

  • Students arriving late to school must check in at the vestibule/Attendance window

Leaving School Early   Students cannot leave school without a prior call/email from their legal parent or guardian to the Attendance Office. The Attendance Office will then deliver to the student a dismissal slip to excuse them to leave campus at the appropriate time.

  • The student must have a dismissal slip from the Attendance Office before leaving campus.

  • Students who are 18 years old still require parental permission to leave campus or to miss school.

Classroom Attendance Procedures

The teacher will take attendance each period in the first 30 minutes and keep an accurate accounting. Adjust when students come in late with admittance slip.

Do not allow students late into class without pass

  • The teacher will provide practical and appropriate make-up assignments for students who have missed class and have their absence excused. (It is the student’s responsibility to ask for the assignments.)

Expectations:

If a student needs to leave campus for an appointment the parent needs to call or email the attendance office prior to the student leaving campus.

  • If a student is marked absent by mistake it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher and clear the absence off his/her record.  Unexcused absences will result in the inability to make up work.

  • Juniors and Seniors may leave campus as long as they have filled out the paperwork and have an Off Campus sticker on their ID Card.

  • To increase accountability written notes are not accepted. Parents are required to CALL or email within 48 hours to the Attendance Office (503-785-8730) to excuse their student.

  • Unexcused absences will result in the inability to make up work.

  • An automated call system will begin each evening at 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The system will notify parents if a student has an unexcused absence or tardy for one or more periods during the day.

  • Students who become ill during the school day must report to the health office.

  • A parent will be contacted prior to releasing a sick student to go home.

  • The student must have a dismissal slip from the Attendance Office before leaving campus.

Unexcused Absences

Any absence from school without parent consent, that doesn’t meet the attendance guidelines, or leaving campus any time during the school day without following school procedures will be counted as unexcused.

Students who have an unexcused absence may receive the following consequences:

  • Missed class work, tests, or quizzes cannot be made up for credit.

  • A phone call and/or email will be made/sent to parents alerting them about the student’s absence from school.

  • Lunch detention will be assigned for their unexcused absence/tardy.

  • Four or more instances of unexcused absences, tardies will result in a lunch detention

  • Other consequences are consistent with Oregon City High School’s attendance procedures.

Habitual Absences

  • The teacher will conference with a student if a pattern of excessive tardies or absences is observed.

  • After conferencing with a student, the teacher will send an attendance notification letter home to the parents/guardian.

  • If attendance issues persist, the teacher will contact the parent about the problem and refer the student to a counselor and/or administrator.

  • Excessive absences will negatively impact a student’s grade.

  • After 10 consecutive absences, a student will be dropped from school registration.
